Arcane Awakening is the third published Adventure of Valen the Rogue, but it was the very first one I conceived. The titular hero and the exiled priestess Elysia arrive at Mount Ulvindra, a smoking volcano straddling the only road out of the frostlands and into the wider world of Omon. For eight hundred years, the kingdoms on its slopes have lived by a sacred pact with the noxodon… vast, telepathic winged beasts who guard a canal through the mountain’s heart. But that covenant is dying. The creatures have turned feral, plucking sailors from ships and carrying them into the dark.
Valen wants only safe passage north. The mountain has other plans. The noxodon haul him out of the bay and deposit him in the heart of the brood nest… alive. Whatever she saw when she spared him, she is not finished with him yet.
